Facilities

Camp STAR is proud of its staff, which is made up of skilled adult counselors trained to work with children who have disabilities.  One Senior Counselor (21 or older) and a handful of Junior Counselors (18 or older) live and sleep in the cabins and are available to campers around the clock.

The Camp STAR staff boasts a number of specialists, including the Camp Director, Camp Doctor, a Registered Nurse, recreation staff, water safety instructors and group leaders.

LOCATION
Camp STAR is located in the scenic and rural setting of the Watson Homestead Retreat Center.  The site is well-suited to this use, boasting a diversity of buildings that are accessible and welcoming to children with special needs and disabilities.

Watson Homestead is located on Dry Run Road, off of Meads Creek Road, 3 miles north of the Coopers Plains Exit (#42) from Rte. 17/I-86.

ELIGIBILITY
Any child aged 7-13 with a disability that precludes them from attending other camp programs is invited to apply.

Applications are due by June 1, 2006.  They are reviewed by a selection committee and considered on a first come, first served basis.  All subsequent health forms must be submitted by July 1, 2006.

PROGRAM
Camp STAR attendees enjoy a variety of activities, including but not limited to group athletics, swimming, hiking, crafts and nature study.  The programs are carefully designed to provide needed recreation that is compatible with a wide range of therapies campers may be undergoing.  Particular emphasis is place on developing the initiative and self-reliance of campers.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Campers will enjoy group sleeping accommodations with four or fewer "roommates."

The camp also makes frequent use of a large recreation building for crafts and other large indoor group assemblies.  Campers swim in Watson Homestead's Olympic-sized pool.  Meals are served in the Main Lodge facility.

TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNICATION
Family members are responsible for transporting attendees to and from Camp STAR.  Transportation by camp staff may be available in some situations.  Please contact Camp Director Kris Kalec at

Camp STAR recommends that family members do not visit campers during their stay.  We suggest corresponding via mail, which can be sent to attendees; C/O Camp STAR, Watson Homestead, 9520 Dry Run Road, Painted Post, NY 14870

Should family members need to contact their child in case of emergency, they are invited to leave a message for the Camp Director by calling Watson Homestead at 607.962.0541.  Family members will be contacted immediately in case of emergencies that occur at camp.

COST
There is no charge to Camp STAR attendees because Rotary is dedicated to the motto "They profit most who serve best."  The camp is supported by the members of 12 Rotary clubs.
